History

In 1985, the Windy City Chapter Black Deaf Advocates (WCCBDA) was incorporated and became the 7th affiliated chapter under the auspices of National Black Deaf Advocates, Inc (NBDA). Establishment efforts were made by the founding members of John Brand, Peter Gillo, Hershella Hearns Ashford, Shirlene Williams and Jeanette Slone.

On August 1986, WCCBDA hosted the 5th NBDA National Conference in Chicago. The conference's theme was "If Not Us, Then Who? If Not Now, Then When?" The conference drew more than 600 participants from across the country.

At the turn of the new century, WCCBDA was re-named to Chicagoland Black Deaf Advocates, Inc (CLBDA).

On July 2006, CLBDA hosted the first ever Midwestern Regional Black Deaf Advocates Conference in Alsip, IL. The conference's theme was "Black and Deaf: Together, We Stand Strong."

Mission

The mission of the Chicagoland Black Deaf Advocates is to promote the leadership development, economic and educational opportunities, social equality, and to safeguard the general health and welfare of the Black deaf and hard of hearing people of Chicagoland.
